The Road To California
We used to believe that mankind contaminated the Earth through our use of oil, coal and other non-biodegradable consumables and pollutants. We never once considered that the planet might one day contaminate us. But that's what happened.
Over a year has passed since an ancient gas started seeping from every surface of the planet. Nine out of every ten humans have since transformed into walking dead creatures with an insatiable hunger for human brains and flesh. We, the survivors, are now food for the afflicted … and we are vastly outnumbered.
So, while it would seem to be an improbable time for a road trip, don't tell Dave Gammon that.
Dave has fought alongside Flex, Gem, Hemp and Charlie for almost a year as they struggled to survive each unpredictable dawn in their horrifying new world. Now Dave has a new mission to carry out the plans he had made with his late sister, Lisa.
He and Serena will forge their way from Whitmire, South Carolina, all the way to Dunsmuir, California, where Dave hopes to find his uncle – quite possibly his last blood relative. Dave is determined to find out whether his “Uncle Bug” is dead or alive ... or something in between.
But it's a long way from South Carolina to northern California, and with the hordes of walking dead between our group of travelers and their destination, it won't be easy.
Our friends have no idea that a young goddess awaits them at the end of their journey ... nor do they know whether her allegiance lies with the living, or the undead.

I was a little worried when Dead Hunger V: The Road to California threatened to deviate from our core group that included Flex, Gem, Trina, Hemp and Charlie. I love those characters and really wanted their story to continue. But not to worry, Dead Hunger V takes us back to how the outbreak began for Dave Gammon and he catches us up on his personal story to the point where he leaves Flex and the rest of his adopted family of friends to set out to find out if his Uncle Bug, the only living relative he has left, managed to survive the apocalypse, then takes us along on his journey to California. I liked Dave from the moment he was introduced in Dead Hunger II: The Gem Cardoza Chronicle. Like so many people even in real life, there was so much more depth to him than what his outward appearance suggested. Even though he was a “biker-type” with long hair and tattoos, he was also soft spoken, sensitive, respectful of everyone (at least the good guys) and even though he doubts his abilities, he turns out to be a very good leader. After reading this fifth chronicle in the series I am even more smitten with Dave. He and Serena, the woman he has come to love, are joined on their journey by the surprise appearance of Nelson Moore, another Dead Hunger character that I’m wild about (he has his own chronicle that I can’t wait to get to in Dead Hunger VIII) and later on meet up with new travel companions. This whole series is amazing, it’s a very unique take on the zombie apocalypse genre and it’s full of action and the signature humor that the author brings to his stories. This is a great addition to the series and just like the others, it takes off from the first pages and doesn’t let up until the end. You’ll be grabbing for Dead Hunger VI to continue the story as soon as you turn the last page.Product details

Dead Hunger V The Road To California eBook Eric A Shelman Reviews
Eric Shelman is a really good author, he has some pretty amazing talents as well. Look up some of his you tube videos if you are a doubter like I was. I have loved this series since the first book, the way the storyline is quite a bit different from what we think of as standard zombie apocalypse style. I was concerned that may be a problem for me the first time I came across it but I find myself enjoying most of the variables especially the ones in this series.
That said you are probably wondering, like I do when I come across a similar rating situation, why did I drop to 4 stars. (I really wish we had half stars to work with because that would have helped me in this situation.) I found a couple of slight inconsistencies, that's it, nothing huge just a couple little things that bothered me. I'm not going to put them in here because if other people don't notice them then why should make them notice. I also am not going to let a couple of extremely minor glitches stop me from enjoying a wonderful series, I have already bought & started the next book.
If you have read & enjoyed any of the books that I have reviewed then you have to know you will want to read this one as well. This author has a massive imagination! I am seriously in awe of his many talents but the basis of this zombie apocalypse is really unique. He uses everyday situations such as allergies, common plants and pregnant females to give one of the coolest apocalypse storylines I have read. The people in this story are people very much like the rest of us and that shows in their desire to rebuild the world to be a safe and happy place. They are not going to let anything get in their way. This story has heart, many interesting twists and surprises, oh and plenty of zombies are harmed in the making of this series.
You really will want to read this book. Actually if you haven't yet, go back to the beginning and read each of the main group of characters story, they are each worth reading. Great series.
....when you realize Dave is not Flex or Hemp ....but you continue reading...And that is exactly what this part of the series is; Dave Gammon's story. No he is not Flex and certainly not Hemp and Serena does not even pretend she is anyone other than who she is. I'll admit, I was disappointed in the beginning and the story started out slow. But we get to know Dave as he decides to head to California to search for his last living relative, Uncle Bug, a self proclaimed prepper/survivalist with an underground bunker and all that goes with it. Serena has already decided to join him but the big surprise is Nelson who insists on joining them. Once again, Dave is not Flex and he has a serious complex constantly questioning himself which gets tedious because he has yet to realize and some readers might forget, Flex and Gem brought Hemp and Charlie into the fold and between them they survived because they were a group who complimented each other as well as helpin other people along the way, Dave and his sister included. Dave is going through his own journey following the tradition of not leaving any Zombie alive. Along the way they meet two very important people that will compliment him and Serena by helping him work things out by giving advise, coming up with ideas which only adds to the strength of the small group. As they make their way toward California they meet several groups of people whom they help, sharing some of their weapons and precious supply of Urushiol as well as information that will help humanity survive against the growing threat. Which is exactly what his family(Flex, Gem, Hemp and Charlie as he considers them now) have done and are doing. And yes, Nelson will be the biggest surprise to some and not so much to others as they make their way to California. The pace is slow in some places and goes fast and is tense in others but the biggest surprise will be when they reach California and learn that Uncle Bug is alive and trapped in his mountain Fortress of Solitude. And unless Dave can think of a way to get him out, it could very well be his grave. And no, Uncle Bug is not the BIG surprise... once again Eric Shelman has raised the stakes but is it for the good of humanity or the death of it?
