The Essex Coastal Scenic Byway links thirteen Massachusetts communities along the Atlantic Ocean, from Lynn and Salem to Gloucester and Rockport on Cape Ann and on north to Newburyport. Veteran journalist Joel Brown gives you an insider's tour of the historic homes and bustling harbors, rocky shores and cultural treasures of this unique region.

Essex Coastal Byway Guide eBook Joel Brown

Essex Coastal Byway Guide is a fascinating and well-written guide covering the towns from Lynn to Newburyport along Boston's North Shore. Since we are familiar with many of these towns, my wife and I did not expect to be so pleasantly surprised with the abundance of interesting information about the area. This book is a very enjoyable read for the arm chair traveller but forms a solid basis for anyone who wants to plan a visit, for a day or longer. The author has laid out a buffet of places to visit, interesting and very useful facts, and just enough history to put these towns in a rich context. Although there is a map of the area on the back cover with the Byway route shown, I feel the book could be improved with maps of each town, showing the locations of the points of interest; but addresses and web sites are liberally included so in this day of the computer, that shouldn't be a problem for most people. My other suggestion would be to add an index. In spite of these two recommendations, the author has far exceeded my expectations and deserves my five star rating.

Essex Coastal Byway Guide eBook Joel Brown Reviews

The North Shore has changed so much in the past 30 years. Anyone remember when Salem wasn't the witch capital of the Northeast, but a factory town? Travelling styles have changed as well, and readers want deeper info on outdoor activities and interests, like kayaking, old houses, or musical events.

So it was about time that a good new guidebook got written, and veteran journalist and North Shore lover Joel Brown has done it. Joel found the threads that bring diverse towns from Lynn to Newburyport together in this terrific book. I learned something new about places I thought I knew well, and travelers can make good use of the Appendices, which help you plan a weekend around, say, the best beaches of the North Shore.

It's a must-take-along for anyone roaming the North Shore, and even long-time residents will find lots of interesting places and history they didn't know about.
Lots of interesting and new facts about towns along the north shore of Massachusetts even for someone familiar with the area.
The book is not advertised as a travel guide, but it is. It is a good basic for folks who don't know Essex Cty, Ma, but no more than that. As someone who descends from founders of the MA Bay Colony, I am disappointed. I was looking for something 'more'.
