The Viscount and the Witch short story The Riyria Chronicles eBook Michael J Sullivan

I was so excited to find this available on the kindle for free! I'd just finished the series, and I'm in love with the world and the characters. It was great to see Hadrian and Royce again, and to see the way they interacted nearer to the beginning of their career as partners. I know there are complaints that this isn't an adventure, but it's good character development, and I enjoyed it as such. I feel guilty for not writing a longer review, but I feel I have little new to say that I haven't said about the other books in the series already. If you're just getting started, I do recommend starting with Theft of Swords rather than this one. Even though it takes place earlier chronologically, I don't think a newbie would get as much out of this as someone who is already a fan and familiar with the characters.

I don't even know what to read next. I have a huge queue waiting to be read, but I'm afraid whatever I pick up will suffer from not being part of this series.

The Viscount and the Witch short story The Riyria Chronicles eBook Michael J Sullivan Reviews

Very short story, but still nice to be reunited with Royce and Hadrian. If you are new to the duo this is a great introduction. If like me you have read all the books in the series, this is a nice little read to remind you how good the series is.
Since the story is short, I will make this review short, too.

The book is really only for fans of the Riyria Revelations.

The Viscount and the Witch basically gives us a brief look into how Hadrian and Royce came to meet Albert, the Viscount who goes on to join Hadrian and Royce and assists them in the future in various cons they run. It's pretty short and quick to read, though nothing memorable.

Can't complain too much, though, since the book is available for free. So if you have read the Riyria Revelations and enjoyed it, go ahead and pick this one up for the heck of it.
Quick read that does an excellent job of introducing you to the characters in the author's larger cannon. Very well written, likable characters and a story that pulls you in instantly. The addition of two chapters from other books in the series rounds out the introduction, and I will definitely read the books in this series.
This short story is a prequel to the rest of the series. It can be read as a stand alone.

Usually short stories are not the best reads. I usually bypass them, but since this was a freebie and it introduced me to Mr. Sullivan's work, I was plesantly surprised. This short takes us into a world of fantasy. Two swordsmen/thieves making their way thru the woods happen upon a ragged witch, who begs for their help in evicting a man from her barn. Of course the men are at odds about helping this woman, one being ready and able to assist her, while the other is weary and more at odds with assisting her. Things are not what they seem to be once in the barn, could this be a trick and a lesson to the swordsmen? Have the thieves themselves, been stolen from? A mystery, and engrossing tale. The bantor of the two main characters are refreshing and enjoyable to read. It will leave you hungry for more of this series and more from these two characters and their adventures.

*Author's notes and a tease of Theft Of Swords are included in this short.
*Book source ~ Many thanks to the author for providing a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

In the world of Riyria Royce Melborn and Hadrian Blackwater are unlikely partners. Royce is a thief and assassin and Hadrian is an honorable soldier determined to see the good in people and to help where he can. Royce decides to teach his new partner a lesson in trusting strangers.

Ok, I have no idea how these two guys became partners in the procurement business in the first place, but I am officially hooked on this world and on Royce and Hadrian in particular. There isn’t a lot of world-building in this short tale, but what there is only makes me want more. The hook is the back and forth between Royce and Hadrian. The dialogue and dynamics between the two is awesome. I am seriously chomping at the bit to read more and I’m thankful there are several stories about them out there for me to devour.
The story (when you finally get to it past the introduction), is... cute.

It's a nice little "day-in-the-life" of two men--three, if you count their rescue project--that gives a lighthearted look at their relationship. There's more talking/explaining than showing, and I found the tale a bit short on both plot and tension. I found the ending too coincidental and convenient to be particularly satisfying, but I did enjoy the banter, the humor, and the unusual character of the viscount. The contrast between the two main characters made an interesting study, and it's clear that the author knows these two very well.

"It's a good thing there was a moat right under the window."

Royce stopped. "There was?"

All in all, I am still I am looking forward to reading the series.
As far as I'm concerned Sullivan can do no wrong. His Riyria Revelations is one of my favorite series. They're just so much FUN to read. For the first time, in a long time, none of Sullivan's novels are available for sale. Orbit has bought the rights and will be releasing them over several months starting in November with Theft of Swords (which I'm reading right this minute for review). He released this story to give us all something to read while nothing else is available.

To those who've read Riyria, this is a great little story about how Royce and Hadrian meet up with one of their friends for the first time. To those who've never read Sullivan, it will be a great introduction to his style. There's no action to speak of, but it reflects Sullivan's deftness with character and tone. It's a sword and sorcery short without any sword or sorcery. And it doesn't need either.

All that said, this is a lot more of a peep and a taste into Sullivan and his world than a true short story. Recommended for fans of Riyria and to readers interested in what Sullivan is all about. For everyone else it's not exactly a dynamic story.
